About Vintage Kimonos

Vintage Kimonos was set up by a British woman, who has been living in Japan for more than twenty years, to create employment in Tohoku, the region devastated by the earthquake and tsunami of 2011. Many people lost their homes, their livelihoods and family and friends in the disaster and it will take many years to rebuild the local economy and communities.

We'd like to introduce you to some of the people that we work with. The first is a wonderful organisation that help people with various disabilities develop work and life skills. A team of experts in clothing design and manufacture run a training program that takes a year to complete, by the end of which everyone has developed expertise in a particular area, from pattern cutting to perfect hand finishing. The quality of their work is exceptional and we are delighted to be working with them.

The second is a group of enterprising ladies who set up a sewing cooperative after the disaster. Their hand sewing is exquisite and their great experience of working with kimono fabric has been invaluable.

We would like our company to continue to contribute to the recovery in Tohoku for many years to come.
